A Media Specialist's Guide to the Internet introduced me to the following video. In about six minutes the video presents students with ways to determine if a website can be trusted. Most kids believe A.) Google knows everything and B.) If it appears on Google, it can be trusted. Not so:
Folling the video, Julie, author of A Media Specialist's Guide to the Internet, offers up some spoof websites. These sites have a flashy or professional looking appearance, but are basically nonsense. Some sites she includes are Buy Dehydrated Water and the wonderfully restful Dog Island. She suggests making a list of bookmarks including some legitimate sites with the hoaxes. Send kids to the sites to determine if they are real or not.
For a great variety of hoax websites, I Googled it. But don't just send your students there (you never know what they'll find). Pick out some good ones on your own to use.
