Rigor vs. Hard

Many of you are familiar with Chris Tovani's work in education. While I haven't worked with the information presented in this post, this comes from a teacher who was impacted by a presentation from Tovani called Rigor and Hard Are Not the Same Thing: Redefining Terms to Engage More Students.

Mary Lee's post talks about the things that make reading hard. The list includes: no background knowledge, unknown vocabulary words, not invested in the work, too many words or too much data, and no choice. She then makes the comparison to a personal hobby and when the activity is rigorous and when it is hard.

Finally, she compares how reading levels change based on multiple factors (background knowledge, interest/motivation, purpose) to how reading can be rigorous or hard based on the same factors.

Her post is a quick, one-minute read and worth the minute.
